SB the DJI just melt every time I hear this song, Black Cherry by Goldfrapp. I got into them around 2003 when I saw them live in London. For those of you that don’t know of this fabulous duo, take a trip around Youtube with them, so many beautiful songs. Their latest single ‘Drew’ is out now, not so electronica, but equally stunning. SB
In a musical marathon mood tonight, just stumbled upon this brilliant three way assault on the nostalgia bone by Queen, Annie Lennox and David Bowie, singing Under Pressure to the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at Wembley! Wish I had been there that night, goosebumps!
I’ve always had a soft spot for Annie Lennox as a musician, classically trained, highly intelligent and very involving. It could easily be argued that this is one of her squidgier songs, but I’m still a fan. Something tells me I’m indulging a little too much in an early 90’s nostalgia fest tonight, but it feels good, so I’m going with it 🙂

British group Blake sings ‘Manila’ to over 60,000 Filipinos in London

Can you imagine the Hotdogs classic “Manila” sung by gorgeous European men with thick British accent?

Blimey, it’s absolutely fantastic!

The music trio Blake sang the ode to the Philippine capital at the gathering of some 65,000 Filipinos working and living in London recently.

While most local singers in the Philippines do cover songs of foreign acts, the English pop-classical quartet is doing the opposite.

“Blake found it a great challenge to sing in Tagalog, but the reaction from the 65,000 Filipinos at Barrio Fiesta and now on the internet too, was certainly worth it,” Blake’s website stated.

True enough their performance has been making the rounds on social media, with Filipinos in and outside the country raving to hear familiar words from non-Filipino singers. Its Facebook video, for instance, has since been shared 44,000 times and liked by 30,000 more.“Loved it! Well sung! Shared it to my Filipino family and friends living overseas. There are over 8 million Filipino overseas Overseas Workers. Am sure hearing the song brought them momentarily back home,” user Rachel Sergeant commented.Lovin’ the PhilippinesComposed of Oliver Baines, Humphrey Berney and Stephen Bowman, Blake is a group of former schoolmates who formed the group a couple of months after finding one another on Facebook. The reunion gave birth to their self-titled debut album released in 2007. They’ve had three albums since: And So It Goes (2008), Together (2009) and Together: Special Edition (2010).Meanwhile, it seems the group is really charmed by the Philippines as they’ve been to the country twice last year—first in March (2012) and second in November (2012) for a series of performances for a local mall.
Blake~~~So Happy
June 9th
From the album ‘Start Over’

“ A trio of unsurpassed musical brilliance” – Sir Terry Wogan

‘So Happy’ is the second single to be taken from Blake’s new album ‘Start Over’. Mixed by Ash Howes, who has previously worked with One Direction, The Saturdays, and Texas, ‘So Happy’ is an upbeat summer tune about the positives of a break up and how it can be for the best for both parties involved. With the lively horns (recorded in New York with Michael Bublé’s brass section) and driving percussion line, ‘So Happy’ sees Blake embracing the challenge of evolving from classical music to pop with the single representing the sound of their fourth album.

Known for their stunning harmonies, ‘So Happy’ once again displays Blake’s – Stephen Bowman, Humphrey Berney, Ollie Baines and former band member Jules Knight – vocal ability. Earlier this year founding member Jules departed the group to return to his acting roots, he can be seen on screens from May in Holby City, and ‘So Happy’ is one of the last tracks to feature Blake as a quartet with the album title now being even more fitting than before.

Ollie, Humphrey and Stephen have entered an exciting new era in 2013 touring and performing as a trio with their ‘Live In Concert’ tour. With shows across the whole of the UK throughout the year audiences can expect an evening of great music and entertainment from Blake whose harmonies and rat-pack banter have been entertaining audiences around the world.

“The year so far has been incredible for Blake with the release of ‘Start Over’ and making the transition from classical to pop. The fans worldwide have embraced our new sound and it’s been fantastic. We’re really excited for what lies ahead for the rest of 2013 and can’t wait to continue introducing our new music as a trio to our fans both in Britain and overseas.”

Since forming in 2007, recording and performing as a classical group, the BRIT Award winners have performed over 600 shows in the UK and abroad including performances at the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley and Twickenham. The change in musical direction for ‘Start Over’ is a natural progression for Blake. Inspired by great vocalists such as the Bee Gees, Boyz II Men and The Beach Boys, and having toured almost continually since 2009’s ‘Together’ (their third album), Blake’s live set list has expanded to include more and more contemporary material.

Blake were recently invited in to Radio 2 to do a session for Terry Wogan’s ‘Weekend Wogan Show’ where they performed two songs from ‘Start Over’. The group also performed at the Soldiering On Awards and for Sir Ian McKellan at an event at the Ivy Club in aid of the Albert Kennedy trust.

As well as touring in the UK, the band’s status worldwide continues to grow. In 2012 the band took their music to China for the first time as well as returning to the Phillipines for tours in April and December and to America for various high profile shows. Spring 2013 saw the band make their debut in Indonesia with two shows in Jakarta.

Spot on Tweet News from Paul @myfizzypop
Review of gorgeous, rousing new single by @thebandblake (penned by @AlistairGriffin for @supporthewalk)  #ToTheSun

Blake *To The Sun*

It’s that time of year when the nights get a little darker, the shop windows get a little brighter, the Starbucks cup get a little redder and it feels like the charts should have a big ol’ booming inspirational ballad tickling at the top ten. This year that could well come in the form of the stunning new Blake song, To The Sun (to raise funds and awareness for charity Walking With The Wounded). Penned by the talented singer songwriter Alistair Griffin (whose Bring It On & Albion Sky albums remain a triumph in their own special ways), it’s an uplifting piano based ballad that is enriched by a military-esque drum beat & a clever production that allows the song to ebb & flow, be hushed & crescendo at just the right moments for maximum emotional impact. Rousing lyrics beautifully reflect the ethos of the very charity they are raising money for – overcoming adversity to achieve one’s goals, bought vividly into focus by the resonant, emotive individual and collective harmonised voices of the three Blake chaps themselves. There is no doubt that these guys are three of the finest vocal harmonisers the UK has right now & the expressive nature of their voices always finds the quiet nuance of the lyrics that sometimes gets lost in lesser hands. While the verses definitely have a sense of stately grace about them, it’s the unforgettable chorus that sends this song soaring, leaving you with a feeling of dignified hope & community that will hopefully last you well into the New Year… (Released on Nov 14th)

Walking With The Wounded was founded in 2010 to address the problems faced by many wounded service personnel when trying to enter the civilian workplace. The number of men and women who have left the Armed Forces with physical and mental injuries is tragically high and these injuries often have a direct impact on their ability to obtain and sustain employment. Walking With The Wounded raises money to fund programmes and courses which equip those leaving the Armed Forces with qualifications and skills required to find long-term employment.

🙂 Blake♥ Always a pleasure to meet Prince Harry, such a charming and down to earth guy. He wished us well with our new song ‘To The Sun’ for his Walking With The Wounded charity and thanked us for all the support we had given. Just happy to do our bit! 🙂

Stephen ♥ Chatting and laughing with Prince Harry last week, just before singing our new song ‘To The Sun’ in Trafalgar Square. Very friendly guy, likeable and down to earth. My article on @TheBandBlake written for @fairsharemusic: Singing In Harmony…

Blake ♥♥♥

Harmony group, Blake, formed in 2007 and their self-titled debut album entered the UK Classical Album Chart at number one. It was also a Top 20 hit in the pop charts. Their music reached an even wider audience when their version of ‘Swing Low‘ was selected as the official anthem for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. In 2008, Blake were presented with a BRIT Award for Album of the Year. Since then, three more albums have been released –And So It Goes (2008), Together (2009) and Start Over (2013). The first three albums are a divine blend of classical and pop songs whilst Start Over is more of a pop tinged album. However, whether Blake sing original material or covers of classic tunes, everything is performed in their own inimitable style with glorious, soaring harmonies – the ultimate feel-good music!

Blake on London Tonight

There have been a couple of band line up changes but Blake are currently a trio consisting of Ollie Baines, Humphrey Berney and Stephen Bowman. Blake do as much as they can to support a variety of charities. They’ve performed twice for the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Festival of Remembrance. Their thought-provoking song ‘Beautiful Earth’ was chosen by WWF to be the Earth Hour Anthem in 2010. To support this campaign, the band turned off London’s lights from Trafalgar Square. Last month a gorgeous version of ‘You Raise Me Up‘ was released in aid of charity – a collaboration with soprano Camilla Kerslake and the inspirational Sing to Beat Breast Cancer Choir. Stephen, Ollie and Humphrey also recently released another charity single entitled ‘To the Sun‘ and 50p from every copy sold will be donated to Walking With the Wounded (on top of the 50% profit fairsharemusic already donate, of course!)

Blake-Beautiful Earth

In October, I had the pleasure of seeing Blake live in concert at King’s Lynn Corn Exchange. The venue was packed with people of all ages and we were treated to a wonderful selection of songs, interspersed with a plethora of funny stories. Particular highlights for me included performances of ‘She’, ‘Chasing Cars’, ‘With or Without You’ and ‘Moon River’. The band’s rendition of ‘Bring Him Home’ moved me to tears and several people stood up and applauded loudly after ‘Nessun Dorma’. Camilla Kerslake ably supported Blake and a local school choir even appeared on stage. In my opinion, it was the best concert I’ve ever been to! If you haven’t yet experienced Blake’s music, do yourself a favour and download some of it!

Rehearsals this afternoon ahead of our shows in Manila, got to polish up our Tagalog! Then afterwards, the Blake Xmas dinner at

The huge Cunard ship, Queen Victoria, on which we'll be singing tomorrow for Prince Charles's charity 'The Prince's Trust'
On 29 November over 100 guests, including celebrities like classical pop trio Blake, who performed on the day, celebrated the milestone on board Queen Victoria.

Cunard Line has raised £1 million for The Prince’s Trust in less than six years.

On 29 November over 100 guests, including celebrities like classical pop trio Blake, who performed on the day, celebrated the milestone on board Queen Victoria.

HRH The Princes of Wales, President of The Prince’s Trust, congratulated the cruise line at the celebrations with a video message.

The Prince’s Trust ambassadors attending the event (pictured above) included actor Robert Powell and his wife, former Pan’s People dancer Babs Powell, BBC journalist Jon Sopel, singer Joan Armatrading, young ambassador Nathaniel Hawley, Master of Queen Victoria Captain Inger, Klein Thorhauge, Martina Milburn CEO of The Prince’s Trust and David Dingle CEO of Cunard Line.

Angus Struthers, Cunard’s Marketing Director, said:

“For the last six years, we have been delighted to have worked with The Prince’s Trust and raising our first £1 million to support the outstanding work of The Prince’s Trust is something that everyone at Cunard can be rightly proud of.

“We look forward to continuing our work with the charity for many years to come.”

Fundraising activities on Cunard’s three ships have included the auctioning of the nautical map at the end of each voyage and generous guest donations.

Cunard cruises have also been auctioned at high-profile Prince’s Trust events and there have been dedicated Prince’s Trust voyages.

The annual “Week for the Trust” saw a big fundraising drive in the cruise line’s Southampton offices and there have been sponsored “Palace to Palace” bike rides.

The Prince’s Trust gives young people practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills, confidence and motivation, working specifically with 14 to 30 year olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law.

Martina Milburn, chief executive of The Prince’s Trust, said:

“With youth unemployment still affecting hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK, it has never been more important to support those who are furthest from finding work.

“I would like to thank Cunard for their commitment and enthusiasm which has helped us to get many young lives back on track.”

Cunard and Carnival UK have also supported The Prince’s Trust with work placements and HR support.

Last December four departments at the Cunard offices gave young people aged 16-23 the chance to develop hands-on skills in a customer service environment as part of the Trust’s ‘Get into … Customer Service’ work experience project.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, accompanied by HRH The Prince of Wales, named Queen Victoria in December 2007, marking the ship’s association with The Prince’s Trust.

A Super date with Blake
By Angela V. Ignacio
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Is it hot in here, or is it just them?
Sitting a mere centimeters away from British pop-opera harmony group Blake, one can’t help but think that even the most hard-bitten female journalist would have a really hard time staying immune to male charm. Especially when she becomes the lone subject of this handsome thirtysomething quartet’s attention for a good fifteen minutes.
Having captured Pinoy hearts during their Ayala Malls tour last October, Blake came back to serenade Manila as part of their Philippine promotional tour for their third album “Together.” They performed at the Greenbelt 5 Gallery on March 22 and at the Trinoma Mall Activity Center on March 23.
Remarkable beginnings
Ollie Baines.
In 2007, bass-baritone Stephen Bowman, baritone Jules Knight, and tenor Ollie Baines contacted each other via Facebook, and the group’s name was born out of mutual deep admiration for poet-visionary William Blake. After a worldwide web search, tenor Humphrey Berney was chosen to replace member Dominic Tighe when the latter left the band to pursue acting.
Shortly after its inception, the band nabbed a major record deal and released its charttopping eponymous debut album, which earned the boys their first BRIT Award for “Album of the Year” — their greatest achievement to date, according to Bowman. Their succeeding two albums, 2008’s “And So It Goes” and 2009’s “Together,” have also enjoyed immense success.
The lads are no strangers to grand-scale audiences, having performed at a number of historic sporting events such as the 2007 Rugby World Cup (for which their version of the African-American spiritual song “Swing Low” had been the official anthem). They’ll be adding one more decoration on their mantle right after their Manila trip: “We’re just about to sing at the Olympics in the UK. We think that’s going to be our moment of glory; we’re the first musical group ever to perform on the Olympic Stadium,” Baines told Super recently in an exclusive one-on-one (or one-on-four) interview at the Mandarin Oriental’s Fontaine Room. According to the band’s official website, Blake will share the stage with Amy Winehouse’s protégé/goddaughter, rising soul star Dionne Bromfield, for the charity event.
Harmony group
Stephen Bowman.
Blake might remind one of other classical pop quartets, but the band begs to differ. “I think we may have started off reasonably similar to a group like Il Divo, maybe halfway between Il Divo and G4 (“The X-Factor” season 1 runner-up group who’d disbanded). But after five years, I think now we realize that we’re actually very different from those groups,” explained Bowman. “We’re a harmony group; regardless of what type of material we sing, and even to a certain extent, what kind of voices we use, it’s always about the harmony. I think a group like Il Divo is much more about operatic voices applied to pop music, whereas for us, it’s harmony voices, whatever the kind of music.”
Boasting of rich, classically trained vocals laced with sweet pop sensibilities, Blake’s repertoire offers a unique crossover experience for music fans, regardless of genre preferences. The musical charisma is even more evident when heard live. “Our live shows are more than just music. We’re trying to always talk to our audience a lot, we try to be funny as much as we can, and we try to give them as many styles of music as they can cope with. We find that people have very wide tastes and they love that,” said Berney.
Its novel spin on standards like Henry Mancini’s “Moon River” and popular ditties by Snow Patrol, Boyz II Men and Elvis Costello has earned the band a strong, steady following all over the world. “Together” contains a beautiful selection of covers and originals; noteworthy tracks include the wedding song “All Of Me” and a rendition of U2’s “With Or Without You,” whose recently released video had been made as a gesture of gratitude for their Filipino fans’ support.
Royal wedding song
Contrary to popular belief, “All Of Me” wasn’t written for the wedding of Prince William and Duchess Catherine, who had been classmates with Knight and Baines back at university; rather, it was released to commemorate the royal couple’s union. “It was written about a couple of years before,” Bowman clarified. “The songwriter (notable British composer Simon May) intended it to be [for] his daughter’s wedding, but… I don’t think she’s married yet, so it got an early outing for the royal wedding.”
Jules Knight.
A fourth album is currently in the works. Berney gave a teaser: “It’s a different album from ‘Together,’ which we wrote with the American market in mind. It’s all original; we’ve worked with Michael Buble’s band [and] Diane Warren. It’s very much an evolution. This is our first original offering, so I think it’s very exciting.”
“We’ve released the first song from the album in the US, which has been very popular. So hopefully you guys will get to hear that later this year,” added Bowman. In the future, the band also hopes to do collaborations with local artists such as Lea Salonga, of whom the guys are huge fans.
The boys have quite a busy schedule to juggle during their twelve-day stay in Manila. In between press and media promotions for their music, they’ll be doing photo shoots for Bench as its newest endorsers as well as for Philippine Tatler (the editor of which is Inquirer’s Anton San Diego, who also happens to be Blake’s manager). “We’re even happier to be back here after six months than you guys are to see us back, I think,” said Bowman with a smile. “Nowhere have we ever been in the world before where we’ve felt so at home, reaching this place. More than anything else, we’re looked after by every single person we meet; everybody’s friendly and warm and caring. It’s very special.”
Mates, dates and some Pinoy lovin’
Blake’s members started out as choristers with illustrious academic backgrounds in classical music, but each had his own career prior to joining the group. “I used to run my own marketing company in the UK, Humphrey was singing in opera, Ollie was also training in opera but he was an English teacher as well, and Jules was an actor,” Bowman shared.
Humphrey Berney.
Knight revealed an interesting second profession: “We’re also in a professional polo team. The first [singing polo team] in the world,” he chuckled. Yes, they’re serious. “We’ve started training, and we have our first competitive match this July the 14th in England,” said Berney. “We’ve actually checked out the polo club here, so maybe the next time we come back, we can be invited to play some polo. That’d we great for us.”
Other trivia: Bowman is into sports and motorbiking, Baines loves to read, Berney is trained in martial arts (“He can kill a man with the back of his ear,” Bowman quipped), and Knight is a bit of a ladies’ man. They’re also all active on Twitter and Facebook. But above all, they’re very family-oriented; in fact, for all you unattached ladies out there, the band makes a declaration: they’re single and ready to mingle.
“We had a conversation about it today; we have been around the world, and I think Filipino women are definitely amongst the most beautiful,” commented Knight, who is currently linked to local sweetheart KC Concepcion. “We’re at the place where we might be looking for a wife,” Berney mused. “And I’m hoping for a nice Filipina wife. If anybody’s looking for a nice Englishman for a husband, I’m here,” added Bowman with a rakish grin.
Lip service? Maybe. But, heck, it worked anyway. Better look up the Tagalog word “kilig,” boys, because after today, you’re going to hear—and see—a lot of it from smitten Filipinas everywhere.
“Blake Live in Manila 2012” is sponsored by Ayala Malls, Universal Records and Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

BRIT-Award winners Blake have recorded their first ‘Asia-only’ album, including two duets with stars from the Philippines. The album, available on iTunes now, features 3 tracks sung by Blake in the Filipino language of Tagalog, establishing a world first for a British group….

The album is available to download from iTunes right here:

Blake will be spending two weeks in Manila this December, performing their new Tagalog songs live in concerts in and around the capital, plus a special trip to Cagayan de Oro, mixed in with appearances on the biggest tv shows in the Philippines. This marks their fifth trip to the Philippines in just three years, showing quite how much the trio love the country and enjoy performing there. The album is out December 14th.

The boys gave their personal thanks to those that helped them with the album, along with a little insight into what it was like to record the songs in a new language.

Humphrey: Recording some of the most loved songs in the Philippines, in Tagalog, has been both a great experience and challenge for Blake. Singing romantic songs in a language from a very romantic nation is a wonderful combination. We hope our versions and performances have done them justice. It certainly makes me feel closer to the Filipino culture and people that we’ve come to know so well over the last three years. The lyrics are all deeply emotional which we naturally connect with as performers. We look forward to singing these live in the Philippines and seeing you very soon. Salamat.

Stephen: It’s hard to believe that only 3 years ago we boys were contemplating our first ever trip to the Philippines. By the kind invitation of the Ayala group and the Zobel famly, organised by our enduring manager Anton, we were shown the beauty, the kindness and the musical richness of the Philippines. We have have been in love with Filipino culture ever since. Whether performing concerts in Manila, or singing for 70,000 Filipinos at Barrio Fiesta in London, we always feel the pride of the Pinoys in their fine culture. It’s our honour to be a small part of this with this album. Where ever we are in the world, the Philippines is always close to our hearts. Salamat.

Ollie: Every time we return to the Philippines, we continue to be touched by the warmth and kindness everyone shows us. As three singers, we spend our lives travelling the world, singing love songs, hoping they touch people. The passion for love songs in the Philippines is legendary, which is why we felt it was time for Blake to attempt our first OPM album, showing our respect for songs which have delighted generations of Filipinos around the world. As we recorded these songs, the terrible news of Typhoon Haiyan reached us, saddening us greatly. We dedicate this album to all those affected, praying that it may bring a little happiness and hope. Blake will always be there for the Philippines. Salamat.

Stephen 🙂 It stays super sunny in Manila till lunch time, then often clouds over from the humidity; no better time to grab a quick half hour of tanning than straight after breakfast! Gorgeous rooftop pool at our hotel, not bad!  Leaving for our first spundcheck in a bit, two BIG concerts today! Phew!

If one song could sum up that feeling of being blessed in what I do for a living, this would be it, I really am a very lucky boy; took a while to get here, with the help of everyone I know, not taking a moment of it for granted now. Ever grateful 🙂 This song pretty much sums up my mood today! 🙂

blake dec 17thGuys are in Cagayan de Oro Tuesday evening 🙂
British vocal group “Blake” will hold an evening of music at Centrio Mall on December 17, 6 PM.  They released their debut album in 2007 which won the Album of the Year at the Classical Brit Awards in 2008. One of their songs “Swing Low” was chosen as the official anthem of the England Rugby Team for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The current members of Blake are (from left to right in the featured photo) Humphrey Barney, Ollie Baines, and Stephen Bowman.

They are also promoting a Tagalog OPM album (yes, they’re singing in it), with hits familiar to every Filipino, and Kagay-anon for that matter, songs like Manila, You are my Song, Say that you love me, Kailangan Kita, Don’t know what to do, and Sa Isip Ko.

Blake performing Manila

They are slated to tour Manila and Cagayan de Oro:
Blake will be spending two weeks in Manila this December, performing their new Tagalog songs live in concerts in and around the capital, plus a special trip to Cagayan de Oro, mixed in with appearances on the biggest tv shows in the Philippines.

The Band Blake at Centrio Mall

Centrio Mall was transformed into a concert venue last Tuesday, December 17, as the Band Blake entertained Kagay-anons with their songs and stories. Blake is a British vocal group known for being the singers at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. They’re also popular among Filipinos because of their latest album – a collection of Tagalog songs.

The group’s Centrio Mall show was packed with people. They gamely entertained the crowd with their songs. They have a different, interesting way of singing popular songs. The classics sound haunting and beautiful with their rich, full voices. Their artistry showed in every song they performed.

Blake also regaled the crowd with their playful way of entertaining. They know how to capture the audience’s attention. So even if it was your first time to hear them, you’ll feel like you’ve been listening to their songs for years. They’re the kind of vocal group that grows on you – the right way, of course!

The group ended their show with a powerful performance of Luciano Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma, an aria from the opera “Turandot”. One of the most popular arias of all time, Nessun Dorma’s English translation is “None Shall Sleep”.

In lieu of tickets, the show organizers asked Kagay-anons to donate anything useful. Others opted to buy the group’s CD.

The Band Blake is currently composed of Humphrey Berney (a tenor), Stephen Bowman (bass-baritone), and Ollie Baines (tenor). According to reports, the band was formed through Facebook. The group is named after William Blake, an English poet the group admires.

Rachel Ann Go & BLAKE sing ‘You Are My Song’ live in concert in Manila! As featured on our new OPM Album, out on iTunes now…

Sherrill Klaus

“You Are My Song” lyrics:

You are the song
Playing so softly in my heart
I reach for you
You seem so near
And yet so far
I hope and I pray
You’ll be with me someday
I know down inside
That you are mine & I’m your true love
Or am I dreaming…

How can I
Each time I try to say goodbye
You were there
You look my way I touch the sky
We can share tomorrow and forevermore
I’ll be there
To love you so
You are my song

I know for sure
That we were meant to fall in love
I look in your eyes
I know what you’re thinking of
I try not to say
The words that might just scare you away
I know down inside
That you are mine & I’m your true love
Please, no more dreaming…

How can I
Each time I try to say goodbye
You were there
You look my way I touch the sky
We can share tomorrow and forevermore
I’ll be there
To love you so
You are my song

You are my song

We can share tomorrow and forevermore
I’ll be there
To love you so
You are my song!

British boy group na Blake, kumanta ng Pinoy songs sa bago nilang album

Kailangan Kita, Don’t Know What To Do, at Manila.

Ilan lang ito sa OPM hits na ngayon ay kinakanta na rin ng British boy group na Blake sa bago nilang album.

In love kasi ang grupo sa Pilipinas lalo na at limang beses na silang pabalik-balik sa bansa!

“We actually love being here. I think one of the great things [here] is that singing and music is so loved, so we decided to take some Filipino songs and make it as a challenge for us,” pahayag ng trio.

Kwento ng Blake, limang linggo nilang binuno ang todo pag-practise sa mga Filipino songs.

Halos magkandabulol-bulol na raw sila, pero hindi sila tumigil hangga’t hindi nila nape-perfect ang Filipino.

“It helps that we’ve been here before. It’s just very different from English and European language,” paliwanag ng grupo.

UK’s Blake sings OPM in a bid to inspire Pinoys
by Punch Liwanag
December 20, 2013

blakeBlake, the award-winning, all-male singing group from England, was recently in Manila for a series of shows in support of their Philippine debut album. As an added treat, the Englishmen have gone all out and recorded an entire album’s worth of classic OPM.

“The Filipinos are an exceptional people. They’re warm and kind and they’re famous for their love of music,” says Ollie Baines, one-third of British classical crossover group, which also includes tenor Humphry Berney and bass-baritone Stephen Bowman.

As a show of appreciation, the group has recorded a handful of pop gems a lot of Pinoys know by heart: “Don’t Know What To Say (Don’t Know What To Do),” “Say That You Love Me,” and Tagalog favorites like “Kailangan Kita,” featuring Joanna Ampil, and “Sa Isip Ko.” They also did a duet with Rachelle Ann Go on “You Are My Song.”

“It’s an honor for us to be singing these songs. Filipino pop music is absolutely gorgeous,” said Humphry.

In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, they trio shared that their love affair with Filipino pop began when they made a courtesy call to their label’s office in Ortigas Center, Pasig.

“We’ve visited Manila five times already,” Humphry related. “Our managers (locally handled by singer-actress Pops Fernandez and magazine editor Anton San Diego) had the idea for us to record Filipino songs.”

The idea was tested when Blake performed at the annual “Barrio Fiesta Sa London” back in July 2013, where the group sang a lively version of Hotdog’s catchy hit “Manila” in front of more than 65,000 Filipinos. It was such a success that it led to the group recording more Pinoy tunes.

All these recorded tunes now comprise the group’s new disc entitled “The OPM Album.”

“Our managers spoiled us during the recording and sent all these wonderful Filipino songs to us. It was difficult to choose from them but finally, we picked the songs that we felt suite us,” said Stephen.

“Fortunately, the ones we picked were your pop classics,” added Humphry.

More than that, though, he noted, “We’ve made a lot of Filipino friends in all sorts of places and we’ve been around the world. Filipinos are everywhere.”

Their affinity for all things Pinoy also extend to food, with their favorites being “Adobo… Halo-halo… (and) even the balut!”

Sharing their thoughts on the damage wrought by super-typhoon “Yolanda,” Ollie lamented, “(It’s) so sad to see what happened in Tacloban, but hopefully with what we’re doing right now, we can do some songs that can uplift their spirits there.”

Stephen concurs, “We’re giving Filipinos the tribute they deserve by singing these songs for them.”

    ♥ Blake goes OPM
By Remy Umerez (The Philippine Star) | Updated December 28, 2013 – 12:00am

The London tenors wowed a large crowd of Filipinos in Britain when the trio first sang its version of the OPM classic Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Recent guests on GMA 7’s Ryzza Mae Show were the London-based tenors called Blake. Their appearance was a hit what with their jamming with Aling Maliit of the song Pusong Bato. They were here to promote their album mainly composed of OPM music.

Blake is composed of Ollie Baines, Humphrey Berney and Stephen Bowman, all classically-trained. The group was formed in 2007, when Ollie organized a rehearsal with Bowman and school friend Dominic Tighe while they were attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

A self-titled album was released which won them recognition at the Classical Brit Awards for Album of the Year. Three albums later, the classical boy band, which was named after poet William Blake, has enamored millions of crossover music fans.

Blake is known for uplifting vocal arrangements and performances, and the group’s take on popular classical pieces is exceptional. However, Blake’s excursions into different musical styles have made the group popular.

Blake is loved for cover versions of Elvis Costello’s She; Simon Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water; inspirational songs like Hallelujah and Amazing Grace; as well as modern rock numbers like Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars and U2’s With Or Without You.

The tenors’ Manila experience and connection to Filipino fans take one step further with the release of their first Filipino album. It features popular Pinoy pop anthems such as Don’t Know What To Say (Don’t Know What To Do), Say That You Love Me, You Are My Song (featuring Rachelle Ann Go) and Tagalog songs Sa Isip Ko, Kailangan Kita (feat. Joanna Ampil) and the OPM classic Manila.

“We find Filipinos warm and kind,” says Ollie. “Most of all, they love music. It is an honor for us to be singing these songs and we are giving them the tribute they deserve.”

Incidentally, Blake enamored a large crowd of Filipinos in Britain when the trio first sang its rousing version of Manila. It was exhilarating to see a famed group such as Blake performing a well-known OPM anthem.

British vocal group Blake records OPM Classics

    Blake in Manila!

Torch bearers of Original Plipino Music (OPM) rejoice! Renowned British vocal trio Blake (made up of Ollie Baines, Stephen Bowman and Humphrey Berney) has released a mini album made up of Filipino-penned classics.

“Blake: The OPM Album” contains six familiar songs led by the group’s well-raved version of Hotdog’s “Manila” which Blake has been performing live for quite a while. The group even performed with Filipina singers Rachel Ann Go and Joanna Ampil.

In a chat with Yahoo on December 19, the classical-pop crossover sensation expressed its admiration for OPM and the Filipinos.

“We genuinely love singing these beautiful songs which we recorded a few months ago,” said tenor Humphrey, who describes the Manila Sound era’s definitive tune as “a cool song to record because it is full of life and energy.”

    Produced by—surprise, surprise—Pops Fernandez

Local label Viva Records is behind the salute-to-OPM project, arranging for Blake to record its vocals in London while the rest of the sessions were done in Manila. Record producers who handled the project surprisingly included Concert Queen Pops Fernandez whom they dubbed as “our top lady in the Philippines.”

They got to befriend Pops through magazine editor Anton San Diego, their official Filipino handler. They intend to record a song with Pops, considering that their OPM album serves as “just a taster.”

Included in “The OPM Album” are two other Tagalog songs, “Sa Isip Ko” and “Kailangan Kita.” Those with English lyrics are “You Are My Song,” “Don’t Know What to Say (Don’t Know What To Do),” and “Say That You Love Me.”

The group noted that Tagalog is “quite phonetic when read on the page” and therefore easier for their “emotions to come through in the performance.”

    Connecting most

Interestingly, the group singled out its take on “Say That You Love Me,” the Martin Nievera-original penned by Louie Ocampo, as the one it enjoyed most.

Humphrey explained, “We get to let go vocally with that song which should translate very well in a UK environment. It is immediately emotionally engaging which is a sign of a well-written song.”

Blake’s previous albums have sold over a million and a half copies, while its live gigs put them among some of the most revered performers today. Named after British poet William Blake, whom they regard as “unusual and more interesting than other English writers,” the group has sung at Wembley Stadium with 90,000 people in attendance performed before the British royal family.

Asked to pinpoint a particular ingredient of its success, Blake’s other tenor Ollie Baines said, “Part of what makes us tick is that we are three different characters. We each concentrate in particular areas so we can be more effective as a group. We sing different sets of music and since there’s no front man in the band, we always find the best man for a specific job.”

    Nosebleed moment for Ryzza

Blake has also appeared on GMA Network’s “The Ryzza Mae Show,” where they sung almost impromptu the popular ditty “Pusong Bato” right after Ryzza Mae taught them the melody and words. Once again, a Pinoy track appealed to their taste as they found it “pretty and sticks to the head.”

    bandicam 2013-12-31 20-02-22-406

Blake and Ryzza Mae sing Pusong Bato

The group found Ryzza Mae so charming, they half-jokingly compared their meeting with the kid wonder to their personal encounter with iconic singer Shirley Bassey. On their Facebook page, they wrote:
“The biggest & craziest tv show we have ever been on in our lives, with the adorable and hugely talented host Ryzza Mae (8 years old!)”

Stephen revealed that Pinoy pop culture has an odd definition of nose bleeding (colloquial term for a Filipino who can’t express himself well in English). He told Yahoo that after announcing their appearance on Ryzza’s show, some of her Filipino fans said their young idol could possibly experience “a nosebleed.”

Stephen related that some of the group’s fans back in the UK reacted by saying, “What on earth Blake would do with this poor girl!”

Well these are what you saw, bespoke in-ear monitors (headphones)
Ever watched a tv show or a live concert and seen what look like pink lumps of plastic in the singers ears, connected to cables? Well these are what you saw, bespoke in-ear monitors (headphones), moulded to our ears; allowing us to hear our voices perfectly, in any situation. They’re about 20 times the price of normal headphones, but worth every penny to ensure we stay in tune 🙂  All ears are weirdly and uniquely shaped one singers in-ears won’t easily fit in another singers ears; that’s why we have cases with our names on them, and even little SB, OB and HB initials hidden in the silicone The cheaper ones cost around £450, rising up to the latest most expensive ones that cost £1000+ which proper A-list singers use; mind you, they can’t make a bad singer sing well, that just stop able singers from misjudging their tuning and timing in very loud/difficult shows.

I have seen the future – and the future is Paris and Geneva.
The future is a clean, dull city populated by clean, dull rich people and clean, dull old people. The future is joyless Michelin starred restaurants and shops selling £3,000 chandeliers.
In the 1990s, we accidentally stumbled upon the formula for a perfect city. Exactly halfway between East and West, serious history, attractive (but not chocolate-boxy), English-speaking, and a capital for the creative industries and financial services. Better still, years of decline and depopulation had left vast central swathes of the city very affordable. So, the cool kids piled in. And, suddenly, a rather grey, down-at-heel capital, a place that had never quite quite recovered from losing an Empire (and winning a war) began to swing again.
Back then we all lived in central London, because we all could. It was normal to leave university and get a flat with your mates in Marylebone or Maida Vale or Primrose Hill or Notting Hill. Not because we were rich, but because London was cheap. And it felt fantastic. Here was a city whose fortunes were reviving and, as 20-somethings, ready to make our mark on the world, we really were bang in the middle of things.
Two decades on and you can play a nostalgic little game where you remind yourself what groups London’s inner neighbourhoods were known for 20 years ago. Hampstead: intellectuals; Islington: media trendies; Camden: bohemians, goths and punks; Fulham: thick poshos who couldn’t afford Chelsea; Notting Hill: cool kids; Chelsea: rich people. Now, every single one of these is just rich people. If you want to own a house (or often just a flat) in these places, you need a six figure salary or you can forget it. And, for anyone normal, that means working in finance.
As for the bits of London that always were rich – Mayfair, Chelsea and Kensington, they’ve moved up to the next level. Ultra-prime central London is fast becoming a ghost-town where absentee investors park their wealth. As some wag put it, houses in Mayfair are now bitcoins for oligarchs.
So, what does this have to do with Paris and Geneva? The answer is that both are places where the rich have socially cleansed the centres. Inner Paris is a fairytale for wealthy people in their fifties (and outer Paris looks like Stalingrad with ethnic strife) while Geneva has dispensed with the poor altogether. As a result, both cities are safe, pretty and rather boring places to live – and soon London will be too.
Why? Because the financiers who can afford inner London neighbourhoods are not cool. Visit Canary Wharf at on any weekday lunchtime and watch the braying, pink-shirted bankers disporting themselves. Not cool. Peruse the shops at Canary Wharf. From Gap to Tiffany’s, they’re all chains stores and you could be anywhere wealthy, safe and dull in the world. Rich people like making money and spending it on dull, expensive things. That’s what they do – and they’re very good it. But being a high-end cog in the machine is not cool.
The international rich – a mixture of Eurotrash and Middle-Eastern Princelings – are worse still. You only have to visit any nightclub in Mayfair to see the Swiss-educated Euro-riche idea of cool. It’s a bit like Jay-Z as reimagined by someone who works at Goldman Sachs. As for the super-rich, the oligarchs, they don’t even bother showing up. They just buy houses and leave them empty.
All of this has pushed the well-off middle classes into Zone 2. And it leaves the really cool kids – the art students and musicians and people starting out in the creative industries in Zone 3, or worse. The 22 year-olds of today don’t walk home from clubbing in Camden like we did. The scruffy squares and terraces that used to house a mixture of squats, bohemians, unreconstructed Marxists and God knows what else now all gleam with Farrow & Ball and the houses sport those identikit Elle Deco interiors that are the end result of bankers’ wives’ “visions”.
These people like high-end chains, expensive restaurants and interiors shops. They don’t like edgy clubs and interesting markets. They are the kind of people who might buy a Damien Hirst, but would never discover the next Damien Hirst. These days, there’s probably more real cool in a single pub near Goldsmiths College (in New Cross) than there is in the whole of Notting Hill.
Of course, they will all tell you that they love cool London – and they gain energy from the urban buzz. But they really are just saying that. From the Wapping Project to the Ministry of Sound there’s a long list of long-established venues that have been shut or threatened with closure by wealthy incomers who didn’t like the noise. Or the rubbish. Or the riff-raff. These people love the idea of living somewhere happening, but they can’t bear the reality. What they really want is a kind of Singapore with Victorian houses where everything works and everyone works and, besides, if you can get that club closed, your property will go up by another 15%.
The other group that likes the way London is going is Britain’s army of amateur landlords – the buy-to-let brigade. I’m sure some of them are perfectly nice, but most of the ones I’ve met sound like the bastard offspring of Kirstie Allsopp and Ayn Rand, secure in the conceit that having been the right age to buy a house in Clapham for peanuts in 1996 makes them investing geniuses.
These groups are a minority. Taken together London’s ultra-high earners, its ultra-wealthy foreigners and its BTL brigade number what, some hundreds of thousand people? Yet the entire city is run for their benefit. Tax empty houses? Why, no. We wouldn’t want to upset some ex-KGB thug who looted the Kazakh treasury in the mid 1990s. We wouldn’t want to annoy a banker who “honestly” didn’t know he was investing the Mexican cartels’ blood-soaked wealth. We wouldn’t even knock a few percentage points off the returns on some latter-day Rachman’s buy-to-let portfolio.
Boris presides over all this like a comedy buffoon. He says he’s maintaining London’s edge as a leading business centre. But all he’s doing is bending over backwards for the rich and the finance industry – and he’s actually starting to harm the creative industries, the media and the arts. He talks about the benefits that being a global magnet for wealth bring to London, but, to adapt a John Stewart joke, when the super-rich appear to do something for your benefit, that’s just the invisible hand of the market giving you a reach-around.
A few months back, I ranted about the Shoreditchification of London’s inner suburbs. But this is what happens when you raise property prices to the point that the cool kids can barely afford Tower Hamlets. Five years most of my staff lived within a mile of Proud Camden. Now, none of them live close. Shoreditch may be annoying as a hipster Mecca, but it’ll much worse in five years’ time when it’s a rich ghetto full of bankers who think they’ve discovered somewhere edgy.
We’re still (just) at a point where we could change things. I’d start with the easy stuff. You bought a house next door to a famous music venue that’s been running for 40 years. Too bad. That was priced into your purchase and you don’t get to close down a local business because you’ve decided that rock music’s annoying when you’re trying to dream up new ways to short the Yen. Ditto, living in urban centres. These places are lively and fun and cool. If you don’t like it, some parts of Zone 4 have the peace and quiet you crave.
Next, build high and build dense. Build over Tube cuttings (like they’ve done in Paris, as it happens) and make a proper percentage of the buildings affordable. Enforce affordability and mixing ruthlessly – don’t allow charades like Mount Pleasant and the Heygate Estate happen again and really punish those who allowed them to happen the first time. Tax the hell out of fourth and fifth and unoccupied homes. Close all the buy-to-let tax loopholes. I’d also shove up stamp duty on places over a million pounds too. Yes, it’s a mansion tax. So what? Your £2m house is part of the greatest transfer of wealth from the young to the old this country has ever seen.
However, as our government is drawn largely from the beneficiaries of the dullification of London rather than its victims, I don’t see much changing soon. Dave is so out of touch he probably thinks that living in Notting Hill gives him an insight into what the cool kids like. Boris is a cheerleader for the rich and loathsome. And 25 year-olds don’t vote.
In the short term, our city’s young creative class will continue to move further and further out. Is New Cross the new Peckham? Is Walthamstow the new Dalston? But there are limits to this: there’s not much of a vibe in Ruislip and there never will be; really, the cool inner suburb ship sailed in 2005. So, when you’re stuck out amongst the pebble-dashed semis of Zone 4, miles from a centre that’s mainly chain shops, boutiques for the tacky rich and restaurants you can’t afford or even book, you might start wondering if the World’s Greatest City (TM) really is for you.
Then maybe you’ll visit friends, somewhere like Bristol or Newcastle or Leeds or Glasgow. And maybe you’ll discover that there you can buy a house that’s walking distance to a centre full of shops that cater to you, restaurants that want your custom and pubs and clubs whose prices wouldn’t make someone in Gstaad blanch.
So there you have it. Perhaps this story has a happy ending of sorts. Perhaps London’s craven fealty to the ghastly rich will finally accomplish what no government policy ever has – it will rejuvenate our provincial cities.

Just heard news that Decca Records (our old label) are currently manufacturing a classical-crossover male harmony group, singing songs like the Pearl Fishers duet, Amazed by Lonestar (as featured on our last album) and various other crossover classics. At times like this I really don’t whether to be flattered, or to be exasperated at this industry’s lack of imagination. I suppose it’s best just to be flattered eh? 🙂

Always bizarre seeing how major labels work from the inside. A friend was asked to audition for this and sent me on the message. It’s a very small industry! 🙂

We boys know Decca very well, they will throw a ton of money at launching this group, they can’t not. It’s up to our fans if we boys stick around I guess.

Mixing eclectic classical and pop songs with rich harmony vocals, harmony singers Blake launched their first album in 2007, just 6 months after reuniting as friends on Facebook. The debut album went straight to number One in the UK Classical Album Chart and into the Top Twenty Pop Chart.

The public embraced their debut album immediately, with over 100,000 copies being sold in just three weeks and earning the group their first Gold Disc. The music industry followed in early 2008, when the album received the prestigious Brit-Award for Album of the Year, a huge honor for a group that was still less than a year old.

In 2008 their highly anticipated 2nd album, And So It Goes was released and went straight in at number 12 in the UK pop charts and Number 1 in several classical charts around the world. This album captured the hearts of a devoted and fast growing fan base of all ages. The album featured alternative cover versions from a wide variety of highly acclaimed modern artists such as Snow Patrol and Katie Melua, whilst still showing off their classical skills for rich harmony. The album was produced by Steven Lipson, who had previously created Platinum records for Annie Lennox, Westlife and Will Young. During 2008 and 2009, the band undertook triumphant promotional tours of Australia and Japan, bringing their unique brand of music and Britishness to a global audience. They even had time to stop off at the Melbourne Cup and perform live to over 150,000 spectators and a further 100 million televison viewers worldwide.

After an unusual encounter with Kiera Knightley during the making of their first album, the band has gone on to collect a legion of celebrity fans, including Will Smith, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and even Dame Shirley Bassey, who celebrated her $1Million 70th birthday party, with the Blake boys giving a very special performance. 2010 continued to be an exciting year for Blake. With their original track, Beautiful Earth being selected by the World Wildlife Fund as its Earth Hour Anthem. They were invited to turn ‘off’ the lights across London from Trafalgar Square, to support the campaign to stop energy wastage. In 2010, their 3rd album, ‘Together’ was at Number 1 in the Australian Classical charts for 4 weeks and at Number 1 in the South Africa Classical Charts during the World Cup.

During summer 2010, the band were invited twice to Buckingham Palace to perform for Royalty, fueling worldwide press speculation that the band would be asked to sing at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Blake were requested by America’s The Today Show, to perform their song ‘All of Me’ dedicated to the happy couple, live in Trafalgar Square on the day of the wedding, watched by over 20 millions US viewers.

You heard it here first – Blake singer Stephen Bowman will be pulling up at the stage door of Dartford’s Orchard Theatre donning full leathers and with a powerful machine between his thighs.

That’s this Friday, July 11 if you want to get it in the diary, ladies.

“I am getting to every one of our shows on a motorbike, which is a joy for me,” said Stephen, 33.

“I leave my suits and bags in the main car that drives on to the venues, so I tend to turn up at the stage door in full leathers and a helmet. It’s my favourite way of getting around. I have a Honda Fireblade which is a street version of what you see in the races at Brands Hatch – it’s very fast, very sleek and very beautiful.”

In fact all three of the Blake boys have a very different and rather wild side to their clean-cut, classical public personas. Behind the scenes, the trio are all skiing mad, and while Stephen is a petrolhead, Humphrey is into wake-boarding – a high-speed cross between water-skiing, surfing and paragliding – and Ollie has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and rafted the Nile.

With not only the singing but the lust for adrenaline sports in common, it was inevitable that the boys should form a powerful group. As well as a Brit Award to their credit, Blake have sung at Buckingham Palace, on the Great Wall of China, at the White House and on the soundtrack to the Da Vinci Code sequel Angels and Demons.

Despite the elite worldwide acclaim they’ve achieved, it is an unexpectedly humble social media source that Blake credit with bringing the group together in 2007.

“I got in contact with Ollie over Facebook, and later with Humphrey, and it all started from there – it was rekindling friendships and Facebook’s the modern way of doing that.

“It would have been very difficult before Facebook to reconnect with people you’ve only met fleetingly or had a few conversations with,” said Stephen.

The three are all classically trained vocalists with a long history of choral singing, but they also share a love of contemporary pop music.

“Blake at its most basic is a harmony group, but it’s a group with very eclectic tastes in music and very eclectic types of performance, so we will move from classical to rock to pop to folk in the same two-hour concert.

“We’re very open-minded, it’s a very large mix of music.”

Stephen adds: “Every style we sing in is always with this very unique layered harmony sound so we take inspiration from groups like the Bee Gees, the King’s Singers, the Lettermen.

“It’s about bringing out the harmonies of the song as opposed to just the melody.

“We always allow the melody to come through. When we’re on stage with our Royal Philharmonic backing tracks and big projections and lightings – it’s a very theatrical and visual show – it tends to be those harmonies that provide the emotion.”

Blake’s only Kent date on their current UK tour is at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre this Friday, July 11, at 7.30pm. Tickets from £19. Call 01322 220000.

Single Selection: Blake ~ So Happy

The Great Gatsby

I last wrote about Blake when their rather jolly good indeed album, Start Over, was released 2 months ago. You’ll be pleased to know that the music has not gotten any less satisfying since then and neither have the boys become any less debonair, dapper or dashing in those ensuing months. Phew, eh, ladies & fella loving fellas 🙂 Anyway, it certainly feels like there is a gap in the market for a band like Blake at the moment. Their music soothes the soul & lifts your spirits, eschews trends for solid song craft yet has a contemporary sheen that makes them feel relevant & aujourd hui (for a female singer tapping the same market, check out Agnetha Faltskog’s dazzling album “A”)… wisely and certainly befitting this sunny bank holiday Monday, the chaps have chosen (and reswizzled) the soaring album track, So Happy as their brand new single (listen here). It was given it’s premiere on Saint Clare Balding’s radio show yesterday, which had me shoving aside my strawberries and cream & reaching for the volume dial – it certainly is one of the most joyous, celebratory instrumentals I’ve heard in a long time. The lyrics do match that to a certain extent – it examines the bittersweet nature of the end of a relationship & what happens when you come out the other side. There’s certainly an acceptance & optimism in the words, yet a wistfulness & regret at what is now lost. This is mirrored by some truly sumptuous vocals that delve into the intimacies of the song – it’s not just singing, it’s bringing the tune to vibrant life through nuanced emotions, glorious textured harmonies & a mellifluous anchoring of the song’s melody. Production & remix wise, it feels like the sort of music Take That & Westlife would be releasing to charm a nation through the sunny summer months & beyond. Truly marvelous – and a wonderful introduction to the album if you haven’t bought it already… …

Blake’s BRIT winner Stephen Bowman on his royal success

Ex-Kingstonian and opera star Stephen Bowman talks to The River about his huge success, including at the Classical BRIT Awards.

Anna Stayduhar

Charismatic Blake opera singer Stephen Bowman, 33, speaks candidly about his rise to fame all the way to the group’s up-and-coming fifth album making it an exciting new era for the group.

Before fame graced Mr Bowman, he lived a quiet life in Kingston performing as a jazz singer after studying classical singing performance at the acclaimed Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Life changed quickly for the young bass-baritone when he joined the Blake quartet in 2007 after meeting up through Facebook He and fellow singer, Oliver Baines, 30, both attended Guildhall together and later kept in touch through social media.

“The first time I knew of Blake was through Oliver Baines as they needed someone to rehearse with. It went from something fun for a couple of weekends to a full-time job,” said Mr Bowman

“Without risk we aren’t pushing ourselves”

Blake has often been placed in the same genre as Simon Cowell’s operatic pop group II Divo. They still consider themselves a British vocal group who sing a mixture of classical, pop and contemporary songs, focusing on making their voices harmonise as one.

Since launching their first record deal with Universal Music Group in 2007, they feel the biggest issue associated with being ‘classical’ is that students sometimes assume that they are social outcasts rather than a vocal group. Bowman claims too many pop artists hide their classical credentials because they think it makes them less cool to the masses.

He said: “It’s always fun presenting a new body of work, even with the evolution of the sound you’re known for. Some risk is involved, but without risk we aren’t pushing ourselves.”

Close chums of Prince William and Kate

Blake is also well known for their close ties with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after some members attended Marlborough College and St Andrews.

Mr Baines, who attended Marlborough College with the Duchess and her sister, told People magazine in March 2012: “She was very charming, very pretty and she was known as being very polite.”

During the royal engagement in 2011, Blake and the award-winning  songwriter, Simon May, recorded the song All of Me which was considered by the public to be the royal couple’s official wedding song. Sadly fourth member Jules Knight, 31, bid farewell to Blake earlier this year after the release of their fourth album Start Over and now plays Doctor Harry Tressler on the TV drama series Holby City.

A new era for Blake

Stephen Bowman, Humphrey Berney and Oliver Baines foresee a bright future as the three begin work on their fifth album. Their vision is to take more risks and to push themselves into a new direction since becoming a group of three.

After one Classical BRIT award and selling over a million albums all worldwide they feel humbled that their music has reached out to such a large younger audience.

He said: “To get an award in front of people confirmed just how much I wanted to be in the music industry.”
