Time for some shameless plugging of Blake’s new Movies&Musicals tour  Just had five fab shows ‘up north’ and now we’ve got more coming up in the south, including London shortly too. If you haven’t seen Blake in a while, add some stage & screen magic to your life, it’s my favourite tour to date, great fun!

I’ve fallen in love again, with a gorgeous Delta Integrale in blue 🙂 Although built by Lancia of course, this special one was owned by the Ferrari F1 team manager for 10 years, hence the unusual badging. Time was when these weren’t far off Golf GTI prices, but rust and rarity has put these widow-makers way out of my reach sadly. The owner of this one was a total gent and let me lust after his wheels for far longer than was polite 🙂 To all those owning and driving these icons, I salute you!

Flashback 12 years, me & my Delorean DMC-12 during a photo shoot for the @thetimes newspaper. One of the most unique and fun cars I’ve ever owned (had mine for 10 years in total). Only 170 or so of these magical machines still left in the UK, so if you see one, always take a picture! You’ll find most of the owners are very happy to tell you all about the car & it’s fascinating history, so don’t be scared to ask 🙂 Been ages, but I wish the UK Delorean owners club warm regards & big thanks for all the support and fun events over the years! Lots of happy memories with you guys!

Blake Stephen Bowman interview

Classical crossover trio Blake have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with over the last 9 years.

Stephen Bowman, Ollie Baines and Humphrey Berney released their latest album A Classic Christmas last year and it featured a collaboration with Dame Shirley Bassey. The group will be performing with the singing icon during this weekend’s Henley Festival on Saturday.

We caught up with Stephen from the group to talk about working with Dame Shirley, find out what the plan is for Blake’s next album, and to talk about what else they have coming up.

Hi guys? Where does this Q&A find you today and how are you all?

We boys are currently in Ollie’s little music room, stood around the piano, hard at it in rehearsals ahead of our Henley Festival appearance; all very serious!

You’re performing at the Henley Festival in July with Dame Shirley Bassey as your special guest. What can you tease about the show?

We think the highlights of the show (aside from the incredible BBC Concert Orchestra, fireworks and 5000 people there!) will be the three duets that we’re singing with Dame Shirley, each very different from the next! They are big surprises!

Dame Shirley Bassey performs very rarely in the UK these days. How did you entice her out to be a special guest for your show?

We’ve performed live with Dame Shirley on about 5 occasions so far, but all of those were for big TV shows. It is rather special to have her as our guest for Henley, but in truth we know it’s the audience that tempted her, they’re very well heeled!

You worked with Dame Shirley Bassey for a song on your Christmas album last year. Could there be other collaborations with her in the future?

We don’t want to give too much away, as our 10 year anniversary album next year will feature a host of big vocal stars, but we will say it’s looking quite likely.

What are your plans for your next album? Have you started working on it yet and do you know what style you’ll be going for?

The next album is our 7th and will celebrate 10 years of Blake as a group. It’s going to be a collaboration album with many of the big names we’ve met over the last decade. Musically, think big, we’re bringing out the full orchestra and all the big guns this time, for some anthemic hits!

Which artists would you like to collaborate with on one of your future records and why?

We have a list of artists we love and respect as long as my arm, but at the top are names like Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard, Elton John, Tom Jones, Elaine Paige, Lea Salonga and so many more; artists who have shaped the musical world we live in and stars who’ll be remembered for generations to come.

You have a solid fanbase across the globe. What’s your relationship like with your fans and what’s been your weirdest fan encounter to date?

We owe our entire career to our fans here in the UK and around the world. We’ve visited around 30 or so countries so far, performing on TV and live on stage, with each country having its own unique type of audience. Nearly all our supporters are delightfully down to earth, music focused and super friendly; though we have had a few random marriage proposals in our time (which we put down to people confusing us with IL DIVO!)

Outside of the band, do you have any interest in pursuing any solo projects musical or otherwise?

We all love having time to work on solo projects, I song write a lot and give vocal coaching, Humphrey created a beautiful CD of lullabies last year and Ollie organises music for people’s weddings, we like to keep busy outside the group too!

What would you say has been the highlight of your careers so far?

Headlining Henley Festival has to be up there with the greatest moments (this will actually be our second time at the festival), picking up our first Brit Award at the Albert Hall and singing to 300 million TV viewers in China on Chinese New Year. We’ve done so much over the last 10 years, it’s quite dizzying to pick moments out of it all.

What else do you have coming up before the end of the year?

This year is all about our UK theatre tour, entitled ‘Songs of Stage & Screen’ celebrating the big anthems from the worlds of film and musicals. We’re half way through it at the moment but it’s been our most popular show so far! We’re touring to Europe in Autumn, and on to Chicago and potentially the Philippines too, before returning to the UK for our festival Christmas show, the perfect way to signal in the end of the year. Right, we’d better get back to rehearsing!

Stephen answers a few questions…
‪#‎Brit‬ ‪#‎Award‬-winners BLAKE mix pop, classical and musicals.
The three singers who knew each other from choirs and music college, launched their first album in 2007, just six months after reuniting as friends on Facebook. The album reached No.1 in the UK Classical Album Chart and crashed into the Top 20.
The band are ‪#‎HumphreyBerney‬, who studied at the University of Kent; Stephen Bowman and ‪#‎OllieBaines‬.
They have appeared on the Graham Norton Show, the One Show and Strictly Come Dancing with Dame Shirley Bassey over Christmas performing their single, A Classic Christmas, which they recorded with her.
This weekend they play the first of two Kent gigs. We caught up with on third of the trio, ‪#‎StephenBowman‬.
Dame Shirley Bassey saw us on TV one morning in her hotel room and decided she wanted us at her 70th birthday party…
An hour later her agent was on the phone and we jumped at the chance! At that point we could only have dreamt of being in the same room as her. It was an amazing night and since then she has come to our concerts and we recorded her first ever Christmas song with her. Everyone has massive respect for what she can do vocally and her presence on stage.
We performed at Beijing’s Chinese New Year celebrations…
Everything we have done in China is on steroids! In this country we might perform to 6,000 people: there it’s 60,000. The Chinese New Year event was watched by up to 30 million people. It was fantastic.
We always tour every year in the ‪#‎UK‬ and do about 40 shows…
Although we have played to massive venues, the good thing about ones where there are 500 people is you can see when there are tears; when you make someone laugh. There’s much more of a chance for interaction with the audience.
We don’t script our shows…
It is a lot more fun when you go ‘off-piste’. It means our shows are different every time. They are 75% the music and 25% banter. It makes it more fun. We also change the music around and no two shows are the same.
We named the group after ‪#‎WilliamBlake‬…
We wanted something very ‪#‎British‬, and an artist we all respected. It just fitted.
I wanted to be ‪#‎MichaelJackson‬ when I was little…
Well that didn’t happen! My dad was into rock music and my mum opera so I had a mixed house of music – I had the opportunity to go one way or the other. I respect both forms – classical and pop music.
I write songs for ‪#‎Blake‬ and for other people…
Everyone has to have a hobby! The song-writing takes second fiddle to Blake. Some is for fun, some is a bit more serious.
I have a couple of ‪#‎motorbikes‬ in the garage and it’s my way of getting away from it all…
I put my leathers on and jump on the bike. But I take music with me. I have headphones under the helmet.
Blake play ‪#‎TheKingsHall‬ on Saturday, March 5. For tickets, £20, visit http://www.thekingshall.com or call 01227 374188.

Meet & Greet with Ennio Morricone at the O2 February 16th. Stephen was a ‘fan’ for the evening taking photos of the great man himself, with Peter Capaldi in the background.  He also signed my LP of ‘The good the bad & the ugly’.

First Up: Stephen Bowman, from classical man-band Blake

Blakestephen.jpg

Stephen Bowman, from Blake, reveals his ‘firsts’…

FIRST MEMORY: Wow, let me think. I think the first thing I can genuinely remember was banging away on a piano in our very first home. It was a white piano my parents bought from an auction house and it didn’t work very well, the frame was broken. I can remember being very young, probably only about two or three, sitting down with this huge set of keys in front of me and making this huge racket, but thinking I was brilliant.

FIRST SCHOOL: St Stephen’s Primary, in Bath. I was a very fussy eater as a child so consequently I struggled with the meals they cooked at school. I became very, very good at hiding the food on my plate, often on the floor or inside crisp packets.

FIRST ALBUM: I think it was an Enigma album, called… hang on, let me look this up… right, it was MCMXC a.D. I was an Enigma fan. As I started creeping towards my teenage years I was very much a fan of world music and the new age sound that was quite popular at the time. I remember burning joss-sticks in my room and thinking I was very in touch with nature. In retrospect, I probably wasn’t.

FIRST GIG: I’m pretty sure it was Blur at a very small venue in Bath and it would have been the mid ’90s. By that point my tastes had turned fairly Brit-pop. It was always Blur and Pulp for me, never Oasis. I remember they were using a Hammond organ, which wasn’t something I’d heard live before.

Blur also had very memorable lyrics. I discovered the joy of standing along and singing with the band on stage, and I kind of know what that feels like now. As a teenager I was in bands and sang that style of music. I got into musicals in school and after that got into classical music college in London, but my enjoyment of music came really by listening to contemporary rather than classical.

FIRST TIME ON STAGE: It probably would have been when I was 15, when I played Jesus in Godspell. It’s the most difficult role I’ve ever played. You have to remember about half of the Bible and you have to be able to tell endless parables. You also sing many beautiful songs as well. It was a great baptism of fire – excuse the pun – into musicals.

FIRST JOB: I sold hot dogs at the Christmas fair in Bath, where I grew up. I lasted two weeks and by the end I never wanted to eat a hot dog again.

FIRST LOVE: I was about 16, on holiday with my parents in Italy and I fell in love with a Spanish girl who was on holiday as well. It was a wonderful holiday romance. Being 15 I was convinced I was going to marry her, of course. I didn’t, but we’re still friends.

FIRST CAR: A very beaten up BMW 3 Series from 1986. It was white, which was not a good colour. It had a lot of rust. It lasted about three months before the top of the engine blew off and I had to find another car.

FIRST HOLIDAY: I grew up in Bath and we used to travel down to Devon for summers. We used to go to a beautiful beach called Saunton Sands, one of the UK’s longest beaches, which had wonderful rockpools that I spent hours fishing crabs out of when I was young.

Going to Devon when I was about five or six was the biggest adventure ever. It was like Jurassic Park meets a trip to Mars for me.

We perform in Barnstaple once in a while now and it’s so bizarre going back somewhere you remember from about 30 years ago, trying to see it as you remember through a child’s eyes; the sand dunes you thought were so huge at the time aren’t at all.

FIRST SHOW WITH BLAKE: Technically, our first performance as a group was at Wembley Stadium. It was the Charity Shield match. We sang Nessun Dorma in front of about 87,000 people, I think it was. We’d done a lot of rehearsals and were aiming to do some smaller shows to launch the group but we were given this opportunity and it really was too much of an amazing opportunity to turn down.

We rehearsed like crazy, walked out to the middle of the pitch and our hands were shaking like crazy. We managed the performance, but I don’t think I’ve ever had so much adrenaline running through my body, ever. It was quite a rush.

The room for the artists afterwards is the same as the players, so we went into the changing rooms and just kind of collapsed. It was very overwhelming. We’ve performed several times since at Twickenham and Wembley and now it’s something we’re comfortable with, but that first one was a bit of a challenge.

Our first actual show I’m pretty sure was Cheltenham Town Hall and I remember coming off and punching the air.

Car Torque ….                                                                                                                      What was your first car?                                                                                                Stephen Bowman: My first car was a white Vauxhall estate, with a diesel engine and over 185,000 miles. It cost my dad about £300 and the agreement was that once it died I could have a pretty car. The old girl refused to give in – in the end I drove it into a wall.

How many times did it take to pass your test?                                                              Stephen: Aged 17, nothing in the world mattered more to me than passing my test, which is probably why it took me three attempts to reduce the nerves enough not to muck it up. My poor BSM instructor was pretty glad to see the back of me!

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?                     Stephen: For the perfect car journey I’d want the company of a gorgeous lady with plenty of stories to tell, so it would have to be Joanna Lumley. Loved her ever since watching reruns of The Avengers when I was a kid. I’d drive her to Paris and back!

What is your dream car?                                                                                              Stephen: When I was 23 and made some money, I bought my dream car – a 1981 DeLorean gullwing, an icon of motoring. To this day it’s the car that makes me smile the most. A close second is the 70s Lotus Esprit – I adore the purity of its lines.

How would you describe your driving style?                                                               Stephen: Day-to-day I actually ride a Honda sports bike as I get more of a thrill from two wheels than I do from four, plus I never get stuck in traffic. When I drive a car, I’m very cautious, especially with others inside. On the bike, it’s just me, so I have fun!

del

Tell me one driving anecdote from your past?                                                            Stephen: Eight years ago I polished up my DeLorean, above, and set off for Monaco, purely to park up in the main square and enjoy a cold beer in the summer evening sun. The car made it all the way there, no problems. It got more photos than all of the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches which line up in front of the casino. It was great to upstage cars costing 20 times its price.

What are you listening to?                                                                                           Stephen: I’m a big fan of La Roux, below and have been waiting patiently for her follow-up album for quite some time. The first single off that album is called “Let Me Down Gently” and has become my 2014 ultimate driving anthem, it’s practically on repeat!

What do you drive now?                                                                                               Stephen: I’m currently riding/driving a 2014 Honda CBR-600-F, which is basically a mixture of a sports bike and a touring bike. With me on top it has a power-to-weight ratio that shames many supercars, so I’m generally first off the lights, with a big smile!
